Diablo II Expansion Pack:
Lord of Destruction

August 19, 2001 by Gero Back

So the latest expansion pack for the Blizzard cash cow is now released. Does it improve Diablo II overall gameplay? Let us see.

Gaming Addiction

I have never played any other types of games except flight simulations until 1997, when I bought “Diablo” because my friends told me that it is good. After I bought it, I have never played it for 4 months then I got bored and decided to play with it. The story line pulled me in navigating into the deeps of the Cathedral, until I suddenly noticed I’m addicted to playing with it. I would never forget that I played with it straight 15 hours from 7:00PM to 12:00PM the next day and I have not finished it yet. The only rest I had was when I needed to go the bathroom & when I ate lunch.

Diablo II - The Evil Continues

After our heroes have defeated Diablo in the deeps of the Cathedral, he sacrificed himself by putting the Soulstone into his forehead knowing that he can contain the evil within. But he was wrong. Diablo was able to corrupt our hero, little by little our hero lost his humanity and became the Lord of Terror. As the youngest sibling of the three prime evils Baal & Mephisto, he went to the East, always to the East to free his other brother.

In Diablo II, a new hero emerges taking on the challenge of adventure & sacrifice with only one mission… to stop Diablo at all cost before it's to late.

The Game

The game itself is pretty easy. A few keystrokes, point your mouse and click. I guess this game is a big joke to those hardcore gamers that played Quake II or Unreal on “Hard” Difficulty Mode. Nevertheless, this sense of easiness is the main factor why Blizzard could sell 2 million copies of Diablo 2. As proof, this is the only the game my sister ever played on my computer. I tried to get her to play Tomb Raider but it was too difficult for her.

Also, the required computer system is very low, even a Celeron 300 MHz with 64 MB RAM is enough to run the game. And the best of all, it does not require a 3D Accelerator Card. All it needs is at least a 8MB Video Card.

Expansion Pack: Lord of Destruction

Okay when you bought Diablo 2 and played it, you were wondering something is missing? The most frequently asked questions that arise when developing Diablo 2 is the resolution. Since 3Dfx released Voodoo 2, gaming resolution climbed from 640 x 480 to 1024x780. I mean when I bought my Voodoo 2, the reason I bought it in pairs was to be able to play a 1024x768 resolution. It does not matter if my framerate suffers but at least I can play Half-Life on a 1024x768. It’s pretty ironic that you have to buy the expansion pack to be able to gain the resolution of 800x600.

New locations

The Expansion Pack introduces an additional area, which is Act V. Act V is the best & most colorful of all Acts featured in Diablo 2 Expansion Set. It is set on the Barbarian Highland; your task is to stop Baal from corrupting the Sacred Stone in Mount Arreat.
