eXPeriences with Windows XP

October 20, 2001 by Gero Back

Microsoft has made another OS that will launch on October 25, 2001. They have named the OS in a new way, not naming it after the release year like Windows 95/98/2000, but giving it a new kind of name, “eXPerience”. Their naming is cool but does the Operating System as well as the name? Let’s find out.

Know what you’re up against

Okay there are three kinds of Windows XP that will be released, the Home Edition, the Professional Edition, and the Windows.Net Server Edition (probably a 64bit Version). The Professional Edition has everything the Home Edition has, so that we can say that Home Edition is a strip-down version of the Professional Edition.

This review is for the Professional version. Here's a quick list of what the differences to the Home Edition are:

The Professional has Administrative Function, Firewall, Remote Desktop Connection, Remote Assistance, Advanced Back-up, Automated Recovery System, Support for Dual Processor, EFS (Encryption File System), and other stuff. So if you want all of this stuff, you could throw another $100.00 in Microsoft's pocket for the Professional Edition.

The minimum computer requirements in installing Windows XP Pro are the following:

  • Intel or AMD 233 MHz processor
  • 64 MB of memory
  • 8 MB Graphics Card Adapter (capable of 800 x 600 screen resolution)
  • 1.5 GB of Hard Disk Space
  • CD-ROM
  • Modem or any Internet/Telephone capable communication
  • Keyboard & Mouse Pointing Device

Note: External modems should be switched on while installing the OS for the internet capabilities to be recognized.

We all know what is the meaning of “minimum” requirements... if I were you, I would prefer to install Windows XP on a faster processor running 400 MHz or above at 100 MHz FSB, on 128 MB of Memory, and 5 GB Hard Disk space.
